Rachel Rosenthal: Thanks—Collage Works from the 1970s

Roberts Projects / Los Angeles / Art

In 1975, at Wilshire Plaza West in Westwood, California, artist Rachel Rosenthal, who died in 2015, gave a performance. She had people in the audience participate in the roles of “father,” “mother” and “friend,” and in return, as a thank you, she gave each a miniature collage, which she enclosed in a small box. This exhibition looks at similar collage works from the 1970s, in which Rosenthal investigated her personal and family relationships. All the collages draw their inspiration from the avant-garde and modern-art scenes of the 1950s. They are radical, yet poised, explorations of line. —E.C.
