In Lake Valley, the eight-minute video by American artist Rachel Rose, myriad dreamlike images from children’s literature come together, slowly bringing a story to life. But whose story it is? Underwater landscapes, daunting car journeys, eerie lands inhabited by rabbits and hedgehogs—the world Rose creates leaves one feeling disoriented, unsettled. And no wonder: the alienation is intentional. Rose meant to portray loneliness, and a longing for connection. Lake Valley was exhibited at the 2017 Venice Biennale. —E.C.
