Ramshackle yet intoxicating, this epic of 12th-century Russia is a staple at home but a rarity elsewhere. The director Barrie Kosky promises to suppress local color, the better to focus on the ethics of war. Hmm. The hit tune remains “Stranger in Paradise,” free of the saccharine lyrics added for the Broadway potboiler Kismet. —M.G.
