Portia Coughlan

Young Vic Theatre / London / Stage

The best writing is both intensely personal and universal, which is why the line “There’s a wolf tooth growin in me heart and it’s turnin me from everywan and everythin I am,” written by the Irish playwright Marina Carr, is so moving. The line comes from Carr’s 1996 play Portia Coughlan, which sees Portia turning 30 and still grappling with the loss of her twin brother, who died when they were 15. The Academy Award-nominee Ruth Negga debuts at the Young Vic as Portia, and the production is directed by Caroline Byrne. —J.V.
