Place, Space and Who: Barbara Walker

Turner Contemporary / Margate / Art

These portraits are about “reclaiming a space,” explains the artist Barbara Walker, “they reflect upon the strength and character of women and girls who have been key to establishing this place as home, and their respective contributions through social and cultural gestures—which can be large or small.” Known for her commitment to political activism, Walker’s works often tell the stories of those who’ve been misrepresented. Devised during the four months of her residency at Turner Contemporary, “Place, Space and Who” consists of five portraits, with sound, of girls and women from the African Diaspora. —E.C.
