Paul Winstanley paints churches, waiting rooms, and hotel lobbies—those semi-public spaces “aspiring to look like private spaces,” he says, which “never quite make it.” That’s exactly the quality this artist is interested in, the ill-defined area in-between. Winstanley uses soft, feathery brushstrokes in his figurative paintings. Perhaps it’s this technique that adds the mystery to his light-filled, dreamlike works. —E.C.
