Antigone is the defiant and courageous heroine of a tale that has been told many times. The plot is simple. By insisting on a holy burial for her brother, Polynices, Antigone defies King Creon and is doomed to death. In Pale Sister, the acclaimed novelist and playwright Colm Tóibín tells the story once more, but from the perspective of Antigone’s sister, Ismene. He further imagines how the rebellious sister’s death may have affected the obedient Ismene. It’s yet another way to explore an eternal question: which is higher, loyalty to family or to law? —C.J.F.
