Oklahoma!

Circle in the Square Theatre / New York / Stage

Recalling the opening of Oklahoma! at its premiere in 1943, Agnes de Mille, the show’s choreographer, wrote, “a very fine baritone came on stage singing the closest thing to lieder our theater has produced.” Daniel Fish’s new production of Oklahoma! is definitely not lieder-like. This hormonal, hair-trigger take on Rodgers and Hammerstein is a big hit—and musically true. —L.J.
