“I do not want to make a painting,” the Argentine-Italian artist Lucio Fontana said, “I want to open up space.” Alighiero Boetti discovered Fontana’s work when he was 17. Inspired by Fontana, Boetti went on to become one of the leading artists of the Arte Povera movement of the 60s and 70s, which used throwaway materials to strike back at the commercialization of art. This exhibition asks 13 artists, including Yoko Ono and Sean Scully, to respond to Boetti’s final tapestry work, completed before his premature death in 1994, at age 53. —J.V.
