In 1911, the Italian film theoretician Ricciotto Canudo published The Birth of the Sixth Art, a manifesto that positioned cinema as a new art form—the synthesis of the five ancient arts of painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and poetry. In a nod to Canudo, the Karin Weber Gallery has asked 11 Hong Kong artists to each select their favorite film and create a single work of art inspired by that film. The choices are idiosyncratic, and the movies are often about historical moments that the artists themselves experienced. —E.C.
