Using rice paper, ink, and paints, Zhuang Hong Yi creates sweeping flower fields in a multitude of colors. Born and raised in China, Zhuang moved to Holland for his studies. “I got a lot of influence from Western culture,” he says. “So my work always contrasts two cultures.” Zhuang’s vivid canvases—delicate rice-paper buds and petals layered into technicolor swaths of paint—nod to Holland’s floriculture, but their essence is Chinese. —E.C.
