Niki de Saint Phalle: Structures for Life

MoMA PS1 / New York / Art

In early 2020 the world bid goodbye to Beverly Pepper, whose towering steel structures helped to put monumental work by female artists on the map. Now, MoMA PS1 celebrates another female sculptor working on the large scale, Niki de Saint Phalle, who died in 2002. One hundred pieces trace Saint Phalle’s career, focusing on the artist’s interdisciplinary approach (she worked across media, from architecture to sculpture to performance art) and her engagement with pressing social issues (women’s rights and AIDS, to name two). Central to the exhibition is an exploration of one of Saint Phalle’s most important projects, Tarot Garden, an architectural project outside of Rome, Italy. —J.V.
