The Swiss-born Nicolas Party likes to quote Paul Gauguin—“I only want to make simple art.” But Party’s art isn’t simple. Working in a make-believe color palette, he paints fantasias that frequently refer to important past works and artistic movements. His evocative figures, vaguely mutant, are instantly recognizable. This exhibition includes watercolors, pastels, and sculptures, as well as 20 never-before-seen works. Party is also creating murals with oil pastels, for an exploration of man versus nature. —E.C.
