Nicholas Pope’s sculptural practice hinges on his deep interest in materiality. The Australian-born British artist traveled to both Romania and Tanzania to learn the traditional woodcarving techniques that inform his personal style. Since then, he has used a wide range of materials in his sculptures, and makes woodcuts and ceramics as well. With titles such as The Vicar and Heavenly Space, the works in this show touch on spiritual themes, despite their abstract nature. A wide array of contrasting works emerging from different periods of his career make this show playfully humorous and powerfully poignant. —Sabina Vitale
