The doors are still closed at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), but when they open on October 21—after a $400 million renovation is finished—the museum’s scope expands physically and figuratively. The plan it to largely abandon its traditional organization by discipline, and instead allow art forms to mix. New works by women, Latinos, Asians, African Americans, and other underrepresented artists will take their place in MoMA’s permanent roster. The museum re-opens with a survey on Latin American art, exhibitions on the African American artists Pope L. and Betye Saar, plus 4,000 extra square feet to work with—quite the luxury when it comes to New York City real estate. —J.V.
