New York City Ballet’s 2021 Spring Gala

New York City Ballet / New York / Stage

The New York City Ballet’s 2021 Spring Gala features a new work by Justin Peck, and excerpts from company classics by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins—and it’s all contained in a film directed by Hollywood darling Sofia Coppola, with the acclaimed cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd behind the camera. The film is shot on location at Lincoln Center’s Koch Theater and the excerpts come from Balanchine’s Divertimento No. 15, Duo Concertant, and Liebeslieder Walzer, and Robbins’s Dances at a Gathering—a lovely mix. Peck is attempting Samuel Barber’s mournful Adagio for Strings, its violins like light in a cathedral, its pace funereal. This is the company’s first-ever virtual gala event. After May 5, the gala will be available for streaming for two weeks, May 6 to 20. —L.J.
