Not to be confused with the hallowed Czech Philharmonic, whose history stretches back to the 19th century, the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra is a new kid on the block. Established in 1995 under the German conductor Friedemann Riehle, the ensemble clocks a phenomenal 100 recording sessions a year, ranging from movie and commercial soundtracks to major-label albums of marquee artists like Jonas Kaufmann and Sol Gabetta. Live appearances, like the annual year-end lollapalooza, are always special events, for musicians and audiences alike. —M.G.
