This festival is known for innovation. Over a period of 21 days, it includes 26 events, 65 works, 22 world-class ensembles, and more than 50 soloists. Participating orchestras include the Berlin Philharmonic, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, and the London Symphony Orchestra, to name a few. And on September 14, something cinematic: the world premiere of a restored film by Abel Gance, 1923’s La Roue (The Wheel). The original score—by Arthur Honegger and Paul Fosse—has been completely reconstructed. Prepare yourself. The film is seven hours, with three intermissions. —L.J.
