Monet and Impressionist Masterpieces

Bund One Art Museum / Shanghai / Art

Claude Monet’s masterpiece Impression, Sunrise (1872), which gave the movement its name, is showing in China for the first time. Outside of its typical Parisian home, the work acquires new weight, pointing out the universality of the sun’s rise in the east. The painting is one of several key works that the Musée Marmottan sent to Shanghai last spring, where they are now positioned at the heart of an expansive showing of French Impressionism. —Sabina Vitale
