Next year, when this glossolalian Whitsun festival of avant-garde jazz and other musical tongues celebrates its 50th year—a Pentecost of Pentecosts—its listeners will, one hopes, be present in the flesh. This year, its spirit will descend live from two actual stages, featuring Brazilian percussionist and composer Mariá Portugal and music by the late, insufficiently lamented Julius Eastman—gay, black, and subversive—who, unlike some of his fellow minimalists, brought not peace but a sword. —E.E.
