Michael Clark: Cosmic Dancer

Barbican Theatre / London / Art

When the dancer and choreographer Michael Clark burst on the scene in the 1980s he had an elfin aura and an Apollonian purity of movement (thanks to his training at the Royal Ballet school). Throw in his shaved head and a punk aesthetic and it was A Happening all in one body. Clark is 58 now and has dealt with the heat of the spotlight, the strain of running a dance company, addiction and recovery. He is also the subject of a major Barbican exhibition, one that marks the 15th year of his company’s ongoing collaboration with the Barbican as an artistic associate. The show focuses on Clark’s radical vision over these last 40 years, his influence as a cultural flashpoint, and his collaborative approach to art making. —L.J.
