“Master Harold”…and the Boys

Lyttleton Theatre, National Theatre / New York / Stage

It’s 1950s South Africa and a single-room tea shop in Port Elizabeth is a stand-in for the entire world. The South African playwright Athol Fugard wrote Master Harold…and the Boys in 1982, when apartheid was still alive and accepted in his home country, where the play was initially banned. Based on true—and personal—events from Fugard’s childhood in the 1950s, ”Master Harold” looks at the caustic effects of racism on personal relationships, and is as charged today as it was when first released. —B.A.
