Mary Corse: Painting with Light

Long Museum / Shanghai / Art

For over 50 years Mary Corse has explored that quandary of life: What is true? Fascinated by questions of perception, and by the possibility of light as its own subject, Corse has used materials that reflect and refract—metallic flakes, glass microspheres—in her canvases. Of her White Light paintings she says, “as you move, or as the light changes, the painting changes. Your perception creates the painting.” In Corse’s first comprehensive solo museum survey in Asia, which opens with her monumental Untitled from 1994—ten meters long—she shows us that nothing, in fact, is as it first appears. —E.C.
