The mysterious Belgian designer Martin Margiela has always veered out of the spotlight. Though his eponymous fashion house is world-renowned, he himself has held the world at bay, never giving interviews about his collections, never taking bows after a runway show. Margiela was a pioneer of upcycling and sustainability. He favored unconventional beauty, hiring models with prominant noses. In 2009, the designer stepped down from the helm of his house and turned to art. In his first exhibition, the mystery man has redefined the gallery experience by creating a labyrinth in which viewers enter through the emergency exit. It’s a total immersive artwork that makes use of photographs and sculptures. —E.C.
