Though we hear crows and gulls on the soundtrack of Alfred Hitchcock’s film of 1963, it’s the female characters who are “the birds.” In the late 1970s, the artist Louise Lawler turned the tables with her Birdcalls—28 distinct trills, squawks, warbles, and chitters based on the names of successful male artists. Her point? That name recognition lifts men to higher perches in the art world. Species include Beuys, Clemente, Richter, Schnabel, Twombly, Warhol, and 22 more. —L.J.
