 y artist Doug Aitken remained captured by landscapes. He saw them as their
  own vibrant characters\, a refreshing departure from traditional settings
  in the art world. “Why do we just automatically go to the museum or gal
 lery to see art when we live in this vast\, sprawling world of radical div
 ersity?” he once asked. His own answer was to work on a monumental scale
 \, breathing life into cities and landmarks. “Lightscape\,” a seven-sc
 reen cinematic installation at the Shed\, is the latest iteration of Aitke
 n’s philosophy. More a fragmented kaleidoscope of vignettes than a linea
 r narrative\, the film pays homage to the dreamlike beauty of Los Angeles\
 , moving from the Mojave desert to high-rise buildings in Hollywood in a h
 allucinatory\, almost Lynchian manner. Devotional and immersive\, the exhi
 bition has little dialogue but features musical accompaniment by the Los A
 ngeles Philharmonic\, conducted by its own Gustavo Dudamel.
