DESCRIPTION:Oct 14\, 2026 - Feb 21\, 2027\nPictorialism\, a movement that e
merged in the 1880s\, sought to elevate photography to the status of fine
art by manipulations of focus and shutter speed\, darkroom experimentation
\, and ambitious compositions. The movement is most often framed as a West
ern story\, with American and European artists as its main characters. The
Tate Modern is now re-framing that story. “Light and Magic\,” which b
rings together more than 200 rare prints by over 80 artists from Seoul\, S
 ydney\, Cape Town\, Singapore\, Brazil\, and beyond\, makes the case that
Pictorialism was a global movement\, far more varied and widespread than p
reviously acknowledged. Fan Ho’s smoky Hong Kong streets\, Long Chin-San
 ’s misty Chinese landscapes\, Lionel Wendt’s Sri Lankan figures—much
of this work has never before been exhibited publicly.
