Up until the 20th century, Indian painting was almost exclusively restricted to court art. Noble miniatures were produced by ateliers, depicting Mughal palace life and its illustrious circles. Court members were painted in accordance with status, and bright arrays of color show them at religious events, ceremonies, and leisure activities. An exhibition that brings together different styles from different Indian subcontinents, this is a rare glimpse into the fantastical world of South Asian rulers. —E.C.
