Lee Krasner: Collage Paintings 1938-1981

Kasmin Gallery / New York / Art

Combative, caustic, unique, honest, brilliant—these are just a few of the words friends have used to describe the artist Lee Krasner. Often lost in the long shadow cast by her husband, Jackson Pollock, Krasner’s art has been overlooked. Refusing to adopt a rigid signature style, she was given to unrelenting self-examination. To create her collages, for example, she destroyed previous artwork, then used the fragments to make new compositions. In this exhibition, four decades of collage paintings are on view. Highlights include Stretched Yellow and Blue Level, but all are majestically brash and emotionally charged. —E.C.
