As lovers of Lucia di Lammermoor can guess, Donizetti was just the man to wrest the last scintilla of lambent melody from this predicament. Professional productions are scarce, so this revival showcasing hand-picked stars of tomorrow should reward a connoisseur’s attention. The performances are sung in the original French, which may add an exotic perfume to the tenor’s air, known in Italian as “Spirto gentil.” —M.G.
