Krakow born and based, the artist Krzysztof Grzybacz isn’t the first person to compare someone to an onion. But he’s certainly the first artist to use it as a metaphor for the multivalence of human existence. Grzybacz depicts the body as a bustling, layered device of senses and impulses. He spends one to three days on each painting, feverishly drenching his canvas in paint and then “mopping” up with sponges to create varying levels of opacity. These are bodies as you have never seen them before. —C.M.
