A Monthly Culture Matrix For the Cosmopolitan Traveler

Kafka’s In the Penal Colony, Third Coast Percussion in Big Sur (Days and Nights Festival)

Available on the Philip Glass Center Web site / Music

Founded and curated by Philip Glass, who must never sleep, the multidisciplinary Day and Nights Festivals is now in its 10th season. The offerings this year are—surprise!—all virtual and mostly if not exclusively archival, dedicated to interdisciplinary cultural exchange without borders. Unlike some of the bugaboos that put Glass on the map (Einstein on the Beach, Satyagraha, Akhnaten), the posted material is far from interminable—the diabolically effective Kafka’s In the Penal Colony gets under your skin in a swift hour and a quarter. Up for a double feature? The instrumental Third Coast Percussion in Big Sur should be just the chaser you’re looking for. Maybe that’s why both are going live the same day. —M.G.
