In the poem “How Distant,” Philip Larkin writes “The huge decisions printed out by feet / Inventing where they tread, / The random windows conjuring a street.” He seems to be pointing out the hidden connection between action and creativity. The artist Joseph Goody, for his body of new work, explains that he’s borrowed Larkin’s title because “it speaks to both the formal question of the painting process itself … but also that of a more nuanced poetic potential inherent to painting.” Spontaneity and history are lightly layered in these paintings, each work leading naturally to the next. —E.C.
