The pioneering installation and performance artist Joan Jonas tells tales about the ocean. Intrigued by the precious and precarious dynamic between the human and natural worlds, Jonas once said, “The relationship between animals and humans is very mysterious, and I think it’s very important, especially in this world right now, the planet we’re living on.” In this exhibition, Jonas’s sculptures, drawings, sound and video productions address the underwater kingdom, its symbolic power in many cultures, and the urgent environmental assaults that threaten it. —E.C.
