“I love the idea that magic and witchcraft and battles between supernatural creatures could be raging all around us but just out of our sight,” the novelist Anthony Horowitz said in 2018. “Japan Supernatural,” an exhibition of 180 fantastical works, puts magic, witchcraft, demons, even a school for spooks, right in front of us. Pulling from Japanese masters—ancient to contemporary—and drawing from the mediums of Japanese painting, woodblock prints, cinema, and animation, phenomenal beings should abound. A large-scale installation of painting and sculpture by Takashi Murakami seals the deal. —J.V.
