DESCRIPTION:Apr 10 - Aug 2\, 2026\n“I am not a designer\,” said Isamu N
oguchi in 1949\, even though he was in the middle of a career designing fu
 rniture\, lamps\, ashtrays\, a cemetery\, bridge railings\, parks\, public
spaces for skyscrapers\, and groundbreaking sets for the dances of Martha
Graham. He explained that design tended to imply an accommodation to “q
uixotic fashion\,” while he saw himself\, a sculptor\, as dealing with
“fundamental problems of form.” Using his provocative declaration as i
ts title\, the exhibition “Isamu Noguchi: ‘I Am Not a Designer’” i
s the first Noguchi design retrospective in nearly 25 years\, and it featu
res around 200 objects. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of his P
 layscapes\, in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park—the only Noguchi-designed playg
 round in America.
