People used to say that Lady Gaga was the “next Madonna.” To this she replied, “I’m the next Iron Maiden.” Gaga didn’t want to start a metal band like Maiden—she wanted fans like Maiden’s. Metal fans are notoriously devoted, but none are as famous for their loyalty as Maiden fans. Endurance is part of why the band is so well-loved. And while many of the best original metal bands have been unable to survive their member’s wild ways, Maiden offers what few classics can: a (nearly) original band. —C.J.F.
