DESCRIPTION:Aug 27 - Oct 28\, 2026\nIrène Zurkinden (1909–1987) entered 
 art school at 16\, moved to Paris at 20 with her close friend Meret Oppenh
 eim\, and spent the next six decades painting self-portraits\, street and 
 circus scenes\, and images of her longtime partner\, the jazz musician Kur
 t Fenster\, and their two sons. She joined the anti-fascist artists’ col
 lective Gruppe 33 in 1942\, designed stage sets for the Stadttheater Basel
 \, and was honored with a retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Basel in 1985. 
 Zurkinden has remained beloved in her home city and largely unknown beyond
  it. Hauser & Wirth Basel is now presenting a solo exhibition of her paint
 ings and works on paper. Spanning five decades\, the show focuses on the a
 rtist’s portraits and self-portraits.
