Video artist Bill Viola is known for his astonishing imagery, but as he has said, “Sound is the single entity that, like the angels in the ancient world … can cross between the physical world and the non-physical world. Sound is the element that goes between them.” In its first exhibition devoted to video art, the Barnes places a selection of Viola’s audiovisual masterpieces among the museum’s permanent collection. —J.V.
