 of pop culture history that makes the whole argument in miniature: Nina Si
 mone’s chewing gum\, collected by the musician Warren Ellis after her fi
 nal U.K. concert\, preserved as a relic of artistic devotion and later the
  inspiration for his memoir. From Princess Diana to Dobby the House Elf\, 
 the objects on view are ordinary. The feeling they encode is not.
