In 2018 the British artist David Hockney moved to Normandy, where he began drawing the seasons on his iPad. This is when comparisons to Van Gogh sprang up. The Dutch artist was known as much for his turbulent paintings of fields and trees as for his earless self-portrait. Marking the first time these two artists have been paired in an American museum setting, this collection of 60 works explores the common ground in Hockney and Van Gogh’s depictions of nature. —J.V.
