DESCRIPTION:Nov 2\, 2026 - Jan 10\, 2027\nIn 2023\, the movie The Zone of I
nterest received a scathing review in The New York Times\, whose critic di
smissed it as “hollow.” Based on a novel by Martin Amis\, the movie fo
cused on the family life of an S.S. commandant who ran the Auschwitz conce
ntration camp. The family’s house was on the other side of the camp’s
wall\, where they lived happily while ignoring the smoke and screams they
couldn’t screen out. Is hollow not the starting point for people complic
it with such horror? Here There Are Blueberries\, which is based on a true
story and written by Moisés Kaufman and Amanda Gronich\, works in a simi
lar vein. It takes its title from a caption to a snapshot in a Nazi-era ph
oto album—an image of two women who work at Auschwitz holding bowls of b
lueberries. The album is made public and a German businessman recognizes h
is grandfather in a photo posted online. The play has been working its way
toward Broadway\, winning raves—in 2024 it was a finalist for the Pulit
zer Prize in Drama—and now it’s playing the Barrymore Theatre for 80 p
 erformances.
