Back in 1972, the photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson was asked to look over his life’s work and select 385 favorites from his archive, henceforth called the Master Collection. Now, similarly, five curators have been invited to chose their favorite 50 works from Cartier-Bresson’s 385. A jury of sorts, the photographers include Annie Leibovitz, film director Wim Wenders, curator Sylvie Aubenas, writer Javier Cercas, and collector François Pinault. What will their choices say about their understanding of, their connection to, the work of Cartier-Bresson? Unpredictable, it’s a Grand Jeu indeed! —E.C.
