 wn\, however\, about the artistic lineage he and his wife\, Sally\, an art
 ist in her own right\, launched in upstate New York. In 1939\, the couple 
 left New York City for Woodstock\, which became not just a home but their 
 setting of choice. “Nature is my springboard\,” Avery said. “From he
 r I get my natural impetus.” The Avery descendants—daughter March\, he
 r husband Philip G. Cavanaugh\, their son Sean Cavanaugh\, and his daughte
 r Delilah Cavanaugh—continue to create art in these rural surroundings. 
 The exhibition “Going Upstate” celebrates the family’s contributions
  to American modernism across four generations\, while noting its dedicati
 on to the Woodstock ethos.
