“We want to achieve freedom of life and action against the well established older forces.” This was the eerily contemporary manifesto of Die Brücke (The Bridge), a group formed in 1905 by Expressionist painters in Dresden. Through aggressive color and decisive brushstrokes, Brücke painters sought to portray and evoke emotion. This movement is represented by 130 works from the extensive Swiss Braglia and German Johenning collections. —E.C.
