 t in a Manchester coffee bar in 1959\, moved to London soon after\, and ma
 rried in 1969. Together\, they made some of the defining clothes of the er
 a: Clark’s fluid\, bias-cut dresses in crêpe and chiffon were cut from 
 Birtwell’s botanical and geometric prints. Mick and Bianca Jagger\, Mari
 anne Faithfull\, and Pattie Boyd wore their designs\, and Quorum\, their K
 ing’s Road boutique\, became a fixture of Swinging London. When the coup
 le divorced in 1974\, their creative partnership ended. The following year
 \, their friend David Hockney painted them in Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy\,
  one of his best-known works. Now\, with more than 120 garments on view\, 
 the Fashion and Textile Museum has staged the first major exhibition devot
 ed to the pair. Highlights include Birtwell’s Ophelia wedding dress\, ma
 de from chiffon printed with her Floating Daisy and Lollipop designs\, as 
 well as archival footage of fashion shows presented at the Royal Court The
 atre and Chelsea Town Hall.
