Georges Mathieu

Perrotin / Online / Art

Georges Mathieu’s explosive paintings were done with such speed he himself described his technique as “an orgasm of uncontrolled expression.” The founder of Lyrical Abstraction, Mathieu, who died in 2012 at the age of 91, was something of a performance artist, setting up an easel in front of an audience and squeezing paint straight from the tube to the canvas in a lawless delineation of life. This exhibition focuses on Mathieu’s cosmic, calligraphic work during the years from 1983 to 1991. —E.C.
