George Condo came to painting with a background in art history and music theory. The barreling energy of his work pulls signs and symbols, the past and the perverse, into paintings that can be seen as portraiture. “The humanoid is not a science fiction monster,” he explains, “it is a form of representation that uses traditional means to bring out the inner emotions onto the surface of a person.” His portraits use Cubism as a humanizing strategy. This exhibition, divided into six sections, focuses on Condo’s cartoon-inspired characters—or caricatures. —E.C.
