The Miami City Ballet is a satellite company of the New York City Ballet, in that its founding artistic director was the N.Y.C.B. megastar Edward Villella, who brought a Balanchinean ethic and aesthetic to the company. When Villella retired, the N.Y.C.B. ballerina Lourdes Lopez took on the role of artistic director. Miami, however, is not Manhattan. Lopez has had a number of Balanchine ballets redesigned, to make them more “Miami.” And because it’s warm all year, this company can, if it chooses, perform a holiday ballet outdoors. Enter The Nutcracker. MCB is performing Balanchine’s version in Doral Park, but with more Florida-appropriate sets and costumes designed by Ruben Toledo and his late wife, Isabel. Live performance will be enhanced by animation and video sequences on a giant screen. Tickets are selling fast. —L.J.
