DESCRIPTION:Nov 4\, 2026 - Apr 5\, 2027\nActor\, dancer\, musician\, direct
 or\, choreographer\, and artist\, Geoffrey Holder (1930–2014) was a Trin
idadian-American Renaissance man. Larger than life at six-foot-six\, he di
d everything with a magisterial flourish and a voice as rich as Venetian v
elvet. And he was dead serious about his art. Born in 1930 in Port of Spai
n\, Trinidad\, Holder moved to New York City in 1954\, urged to come by th
e choreographer Agnes de Mille\, who saw him dance in St. Thomas. After st
udying with Katharine Dunham\, he joined the Metropolitan Opera Ballet\, a
nd then began starring on Broadway in musicals and plays\, and in movies.
A Tony winner for both the direction and the costume design of The Wiz (19
75)\, Holder also choreographed dances for Alvin Ailey’s company and the
Dance Theatre of Harlem. Meanwhile\, he was always painting. This exhibit
ion in North Miami sets out to answer the question: How do you reintroduce
the legacy of someone who is already so well known? Working in collaborat
ion with Holder’s son Léo Holder\, the curator Erica Moiah James has pu
 t together a show of 60 never-before-seen paintings\, drawings\, collages\
, and sculptures. They do not move chronologically but thematically\, reve
aling the artist’s inspirations along the way.
